Liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) are highly specialized cells that form the scavenger endothelium within the liver. They exhibit an extraordinarily high uptake of soluble waste molecules (< 0.23 μm), thus playing an important role in blood clearance. The supply of primary LSECs is limited by the low and sporadic availability of human liver tissue and can only be kept for up to 1-2 population doublings in culture.

Human upcyte LSECs are derived from single donor primary LSECs. They can then be cultured to provide a useful in vitro tool to complement hepatotoxicity evaluation. The cells exhibit uptake activity similar to that of primary cells, making them effective for in vitro predictive models. upcyte LSECs have been tested for numerous cell type specific markers (CD31+ and Mannose receptor), scavenging and uptake functions, as well as the ability to form tubes in Matrigel®.

upcyte® LSECs are provided in 2 ml cryo-vials with a minimum of 2×10^6 frozen cells per vial and are ready-to-use. Our cryopreserved upcyte® LSECs are at a later state in proliferation terms. Further expansion will lead to the cells expressing senescence genes and the phenotype is lost.
